CHIO Aachen Thursday Recap: CDIO5* Grand Prix, Driven Dressage Prize of the Martello Immobilienmanagement

CDIO5* Grand Prix: Germany Gains an Early Lead over the USA in Second and Denmark in Third

Team Germany, composed of Isabel Werth, Kristina Broring-Sprehe, Dorothee Schneider, and Sonke Rothenberger wrapped up Thursday’s CDIO Grand Prix with a nearly 30 point lead over the second and third place finishers, Team USA and Team Denmark. Werth and the Oldenberg gelding Weihegold set bar high with a score of 83.271%, trailed closely by Broring-Sprehe and Desperados with an 82.314. Schneider and Showtime rounded out the top three spots in the individual standings with an 80.700. Along with Rothenberger’s 4^th place individual finish with Cosmo (75.600), Team Germany’s total at 246.285 going into the CDIO Special and Freesytle.

USA’s Steffen Peters and Legolas 92 secured 4^th in the individual standings with a 77.243, providing the anchor for Team USA’s second place standing. Peters, who was originally entered on Rosamunde, had to swap mounts last minute to allow the mare to recover from a muscle strain. Along with the scores from the rest of the US riders, Shelley Francis and Doktor (72.2), Tuny Page and Woodstock (68.971), and Katherine Bateson-Chandler and Alcazar (66.314), Team USA’s total sits at 218.414. Team Denmark trails them closely with a 214.242.

The CDIO Grand Prix Special, or MEGGLE-Prize, will begin Saturday’s competition at the CHIO at 9am on Saturday in the Deutsche Bank Stadium. The CDIO Freestyle (Deutsche Bank Prize) will commence Sunday at 9:30am, also in the Deutsche Bank Stadium.

Dutch Team and Boyd Exell Lead the Field Following Driven Dressage in CAIO, Team USA in Second

Team Denmark is poised for victory following the driven dressage portion of the CAIO Nations Cup, with Ijsbrand Chardon Theo Timmermann and Koos de Ronde preparing to leave fellow nations trailing beind them. Driving follows the same format as eventing in both competition and scoring, with the teams tackling dressage, marathon (similar to cross country), and obstacles and seeking to achieve the lowest amount of points. With a combined score of 81.46, Team Netherlands is in the lead followed by the USA with 95.27 and Hungary with 100.58.

As for the individual driven dressage results in the Prize of the Martello Immobilienmanagement, Australian World Champion, Boyd Exell, is well placed to claim his sixth victory in the CAIO Aachen. Exell’s winning dressage score of 34.86 topped the USA’s Chester Weber with 38.34 and the Netherlands’ Ijsbrand Chardon with 39.05.
